Printing Inks for Food Packaging — The Food-Grade Guide
Not every ink belongs on food packaging. This guide explains which printing inks are used for cups, bowls, buckets and takeaway packaging in Pakistan, what “food-grade” really means, and how we print branded packaging safely at our Lahore factory.
Types of Printing Inks Used for Food Packaging
UV-Cured Inks
Cured instantly under UV light into a stable, bonded layer. Best for multi-colour and photo-quality logos on paper cups, PET glasses and bowls.
Water-Based Inks
Low odour and widely used on paper-board packaging — paper cups, bowls, buckets and food bags. A dependable choice for high-volume runs.
Low-Migration Systems
Formulated so ink components don't transfer through packaging into food. The standard we hold every food-and-beverage print job to.
The 3 Rules of Food-Safe Printing
- Print the outside only — ink never touches the food-contact surface of a cup, bowl or bucket.
- Use low-migration formulations — so nothing transfers through the board or plastic into your drink or food.
- Cure completely before packing — fully cured ink is stable, scratch-resistant and odour-free.
What To Check
Frequently Asked Questions
Which printing inks are used for food packaging?+
Food packaging in Pakistan is typically printed with UV-cured inks (instant curing, vibrant multi-colour output) or water-based inks (low odour, commonly used on paper cups and bowls). Both are applied to the outside of the packaging — never the food-contact surface — and selected for low-migration behaviour.
What does 'food-grade ink' actually mean?+
It means the ink system is formulated and applied so that ink components do not transfer into food in harmful amounts. In practice: printing only on the non-food-contact side, using low-migration formulations, and fully curing the ink before packing.
Are you a food grade printing ink supplier?+
We are a printing factory, not an ink supplier — we don't sell inks separately. But if you need packaging printed with food-safe inks (cups, glasses, bowls, buckets, bags), we handle the complete job: material, food-grade printing and delivery across Pakistan.
Is UV printing safe for coffee cups and food containers?+
Yes — when properly cured, UV inks form a stable, bonded layer on the outer surface of the cup. UV is our recommended method for multi-colour logos on paper cups, PET glasses and bowls.
Do you use food-grade inks on all products?+
Yes. Every product we print for food and beverage use — paper cups, plastic and PET glasses, bowls, buckets, food bags and napkins — is printed with inks appropriate for food packaging and the specific material.
Can I print my logo in multiple colors with food-safe inks?+
Yes. UV printing supports full-colour, photo-quality logos while remaining food-safe. Screen printing suits 1–2 colour logos at high volume. Both use food-packaging-appropriate ink systems.
